Highlighting Achievements

“This recognition reflects the joy of cycling and the community spirit of every woman who has been part of our journey,” said Samra Said, emphasizing the importance of community in celebrating women’s contributions to sports.

International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, 2026, coincides with the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, where female athletes have made significant strides. Elana Meyers Taylor won her first Olympic gold in Women’s Monobob, marking a milestone in her illustrious career that includes six Olympic medals.

Kaillie Humphries further solidified her status as the most successful bobsleigh pilot in Winter Olympic history by winning two bronze medals at the event. Her achievements, alongside those of her peers, highlight the growing prominence of women in competitive sports.

Nadja Pasternack’s return to competition post-motherhood, where she helped secure sixth place in the 2-woman event, showcases the evolving landscape of athletics, supported by the IBSF maternity leave policy that allows athletes to start families without losing ranking points.

Kelly Curtis, who finished 12th in skeleton, exemplifies the balance many female athletes strive for between elite sport and family life. Meanwhile, Maja Voigt made history as the first Danish athlete to compete in Olympic bobsleigh at just 18 years old, while Marta Andžāne was the youngest athlete in the bobsleigh and skeleton field.

Women have also played pivotal roles off the ice, with a notable increase in female IBSF officials over the past four years, reflecting a broader commitment to gender equality in sports administration.

In London, Transport for London and Santander Cycles unveiled ten hire bikes named after inspirational female cyclists in honor of International Women’s Day, further promoting the theme of recognition and empowerment.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Give to Gain,” encouraging a collaborative mindset for achieving gender equality. The question posed, “What will you give to gain gender equality?” resonates deeply within the context of ongoing efforts to uplift women’s voices and contributions.

As part of the celebrations, Women at Imperial Week will take place from March 9 to 13, highlighting women’s achievements at the university and inviting participation in recognizing their impact.

International Women’s Day has been officially recognized by the United Nations since 1977, and the events at Milano Cortina 2026 serve as a testament to the progress made and the work still needed to achieve true equality.
