In a startling warning, Virgin Media O2 has raised alarms about scammers exploiting AI tools to generate fake customer service numbers. This development, announced on April 24, 2026, puts millions of consumers across the UK at risk of falling prey to fraud.
According to the company, around 1 in 10 people trust these AI-generated phone numbers without a second thought. Even more concerning, 15% of Brits never take any additional steps to verify if a number is legitimate. With approximately 13% of the population having encountered fake customer service numbers via search engines or chatbots, the threat feels all too real.
Virgin Media O2 has flagged over 1 billion suspicious calls to customers before they answer. This staggering figure highlights the scale of the issue and underscores a growing trend where fraudsters manipulate AI-driven search results to present convincing but fraudulent contact details for well-known brands.
Murray Mackenzie from Virgin Media noted, “Criminals know when people search for help, they’re often looking for a quick answer.” The ease with which these scammers operate is alarming — especially when 27% of older Gen Z and Millennials aged 25–34 have encountered such fake numbers.
But it’s not just young adults at risk. A significant 22% of consumers are unsure whether any number they’ve encountered online is genuine. This uncertainty breeds vulnerability.
To combat this growing threat, Virgin Media O2 is investing heavily in anti-fraud technology. They urge customers to always use customer service numbers listed on official company websites or apps — or even better, those printed on their bills.
“AI tools are creating new opportunities for fraudsters to create realistic looking fake numbers that appear through search results or chatbots,” Mackenzie added. The company has dealt with numerous cases where customers mistakenly called these fraudulent numbers and ended up scammed.
As part of their fraud prevention efforts, Virgin Media O2 encourages users to report suspicious numbers by texting 7726. This proactive approach aims not only to protect customers but also to foster scam awareness in an increasingly digital world.
The landscape of telecom security is changing rapidly — and with it comes new challenges for both companies and consumers alike. As technology evolves, so too do the tactics employed by those looking to exploit it.
